i have 2 two year old ATA133 maxtors and 1 one year old SATA maxtor. all are working well and have never had any issues. i doubt you are much more statistically likely to have your maxtor fail than any of the other brands.
 
I've only really had trouble with Maxtor drives. I love Seagate and Western Digital drives, so either one will work. Just save the packaging incase you need to send it back.
