hard drive brands? is there a difference?

so, is there much of a difference in longevity between hard drive brands? I've pretty much always stuck to western digital or maxtor. Thinking of getting a 180-200 gig drive, speed isn't critical either, it's storage.

With either Maxtor or WD I don't see any huge differances as far as longevity. Warrenty period would be pertinant, but they vary for both brands by model. I am somewhat partial to WD due to speed.

I still don't trust IBM (and now IBM/Hitachi) drives search around if you don't already know.

WD is louder, but if you're not a quiet freak it won't matter. What will matter is that all Maxtor Diamondmax are now just 1 year warranty, while the WD 8 MB cache drives are still 3 years. Price is about the same at newegg.

I wouldn't turst any brand when it comes to HDD reliability...
true some brand have slightly more issue than other...but even with the best brand out there...you can have problems...

The conclusion is that RAID 1 (mirroring) is the way to go if you want your data to be safe..
