Hard Drive Boot Virus-Removal

i'd think since formatting wipes all data from a harddrive, formatting would be a safe option.

Schadenfroh is correct .... but let me add one thing to that. In windows ME or windows XP, you'll want to disable system restore because a copy of the virus is stored in the restore folder.

It's on a new hard drive I sent to my brother, a 40GB WD. Sadly enough, I have to work with it over the phone, which is a pain in the ass. I had him reformat twice, install Windows XP, and run that antivirus program, and nothing. The BIOS still reports a boot virus whenever the damned thing is plugged in. I'm at a loss for ideas at this point... I don't want it to infect his primary hard drive, and I've done everything as mentioned, I don't know what in god's name I can do save for burning the thing in a fire, hoping that THAT at least wipes the virus out. For christ's sake, if erasing everything off the hard drive and doing a virus scan doesn't work, what in the hell will?

I would think you could boot from a winXP CD, go to the recovery console and rewrite the Master Boot record (MBR)

What command would that be? I'll have him give it a try.
