Would it be possible to mount the drives internally using those usb to ata converters and then get a switch for the power, and mount in on a drive bay cover? Then you could turn them on and off as needed, as if they were in external enclosures, but without all the extra wires and power bricks. It would be conveinient for backups because you can have them off for data safety.
