hard drive and ram installation problems

1. I just bought a new WD 120GB hard drive. i have the latest BIOS update, I have tried every different cable and jumper configuration possible. Using WinXP. i have to boot in safe mode, and it says found new disk drive, but then while it is detecting, it shuts down and reboots. the drive is detected in the BOIS, and everything looks fine there. other hard drives in the system are maxtor 60GB and WD 80GB. is there something else i should be doing?

2. ram is a kingston 256MB pc133 stick. i already have one in there that is 256MB pc133, but a different brand. I have tried the memory in different slot for both the modules. when i leave the original in bank 1, and put the new one in bank 3, both are detected in the respected banks in the BOIS, but the total still shows as 256MB.

when i boot with both of the new devices installed, the screen goes blank just before booting windows.

How do you have the WD drive jumpered (Master/Slave/Single/Cable select)

Is it the only drive on the cable?

What brand/model motherboard are you using?
