hard drive and OS related questions

Some things that concern me for down the road.

1. Is there a way to get the data from 1 hard drive to another while leaving the operating system behind? I want to know in case I upgrade in the future and don?t want the upgrading versions.

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of upgrading an OS opposed to getting the original?

3. Lets say in a few years I decide to upgrade to a new hard drive and there?s a new OS out, is it possible to just install the new OS, then move all the games/software to the new hard drive?

I'm sorry if I sound stupid with these questions but they have been bugging me for a long time. 😱

Thanks.

1.If you want to just get some files, but not the os it depends on the fies your trying to save, if it's data like mp3's and movies just copy what you want onto the new drive, but if it's program files it messy and easier to copy the entire drive.

2. not quite sure what your asking, elaborate. newer windows os's have lots more features, but features equal bloat, the more bloat the slower, but features are nice too. ie XP has a huge library of drivers, so installing new hardware is generally much easier and more automated.

3.your using windows I'm assuming, just install the new os over the old os, it will convert what it can and save your programs if possible.
