Hard drive and/or ssd?

New build, mainly for gaming, some pictures. General question:

Is it better to get:

1. one TB hard drive (WD black sata III) plus a 126gb SSD Crucial M4(for os) or

2. a 258 GB SSD Plextor M5P and no other hard drive?
Do not want to spend over $200.00, give or take a few bucks.

Given the cost restraints, what option would you choose?
I've also read an SSD doesn't do a lot for games except load times, and it's preferable to keep the OS separate from games folders. ???

If you can get by with the 256gb SSD I think it would be the best option for you. There is no need to install games to a HDD if your SSD will meet your needs anyways. Just add a HDD later if you need more storage space for pictures, videos, music, etc.

Agreed. How much data do you have? If everything you have and care about fits on the 256 with room to spare, go for it. Add the HDD later if needed.

If you're like me and have 256GB or more in just photos alone, clearly option 1 is the way to go.

The only clear answer is a question - how much space do you need. Make sure you get enough space. That's all there is to it.

(and keep in mind you can buy more space later on)

I'd go with option 1. It's nice to have a large storage drive where you can put things on without giving much thought to capacity, and a fast SSD that you can put the specific apps/games you want/need to run quickly. 128GB should suffice for that, though of course more is always better.

Something else to consider: If you go with option 2 and find yourself constrained in the future, you could easily just add a spindle and still have a 258gb SSD. But if you go with option 1, you are pretty much stuck with the 126gb SSD unless you want to go through the hassle of selling the drive to upgrade. The bigger SSD will also be faster.

ssds have dropped in cost don't buy a 128gb ssd. get a 250gb or bigger.

I was going to get a 256 gig SSD as a single drive. I am also looking at reviews of SSD's, and want one that is reliable (i.e. Samsung, Plextor). Of course if money was no object I'd choose a larger HD.

256GB as a single drive, add HD later if needed. And no, games and OS on same.

If you got steam, then use that its an online downloading service. Dont keep old games you dont play anymore installed. You can always reinstall them if needed.

I am planning on getting a second HD in the future. I do have an external back up HD at 500gig. BTW I also have a 75 gig 'Raptor, but don't know if it's worth installing? It's in good condition and only used about three years.
