Maybe I'm going crazy but my hard drive seems to be whirring all the time, never noticed before, is this normal or is there a problem?

I personally think thats a really bad idea...that could put uneeded wear on the HDs.

Its normal to have the drives spinning all th time, so don't worry about it. They can spin 24/7 and it won't hur them a bit.

Power management is in your control panel. I too would not have the drive spin down. How much memory do you have? If you do not have enough, then your system will be shagging the swap file like crazy! The swap file is what your OS uses when it runs out of RAM. When your hard drive is on, do you notice a slowdown in file loading (or writing) times? If so, it's a good bet your OS has run out of RAM.
