I've had my IBM DeskStar for about 5 years now and I think it's time for an upgrade.

I'm looking for a budget HDD, so anything under $100 would be great.

I guess I'm looking for a SATA drive since from what I've read it offers faster performance compared to IDE.

Storage space wise, I'm looking for 150GB+.

In terms of importance I'll list them here:

1. Quiet
2. Reliability
3. Speed

Thanks in advance.

I think most Seagate drives will meet your requirements.
Go to Newegg and choose your size. I think they have a 250GB SATA for about $100.00

I've read the reviews on the Barracuda 7200.9 (160 GB, SATA, 8MB cache)

Some people seem to say it's a little noisy. Anyone else that has this drive comment about this?

I was also looking at the WD1600JS. How is this drive compared to the Barracuda?

Are there any other decent HDDs from brands other than Seagate and WD?

EDIT:

I don't think my mobo is SATAII compatible. Would this cause an issue?

I know most people hate Maxtor but their Maxline III series is very good. I am using 4 of them and they are pretty sweet. 5yr warranty too.

Quiet - Samsung spinpoints or the 7200.10 baracuda (320GB or lower).

The seagate range used to be really quiet, then they hit the 7200.5 range and it started creeping up, the 7200.10 looks very promising while the spinpoints are very, very quiet indeed.

Reliability - Pretty much any HD will have the same potential, seagate have the 5 year warranty which doesn't mean that it'll last longer, but it does suggest it.

Performance - It varies, the larger the drive the faster it is. The 7200.10 line seems promising.

In short either a samsung spinpoint or 7200.10 would be a good bet.

The 160GB Samsung Spinpoints is starting to look pretty good to me.

Any comments on this particular drive?

I've got a PATA 250GB Spinpoint, i ditched an old 80GB maxtor for it and the noise from my computer dropped massively. (low noise PC, HDs are the loudest part at the moment). It's got a very smooth noise, planning on picking up another one or two soon.

The reason for larger drives being faster are multiple, higher density, more read/write heads because of the increased numbers of platters etc.

I wouldn't get the older 7200.9 drives, most of the accounts of it were that it had a very noticable noise.

Are they comparable to Newegg?
They're a superb e-tailer. Their prices are often superior to Neweggs simply because they have free shipping on most (all?) of their stuff.
