Hard drive acting flaky!

I received a quantum 30gb AS model hd about 6 weeks ago as an rma. I simply formatted and powered it up okay and then put it on the shelf till this week.

I tried to ghost another quantum hd partition onto it but it would keep giving me errors which I figured could be me. I then tried to do a fresh windows ME install but the install would freeze at different places. After 6 attempts I took the drive out and used a quantum 20gb AS to do the install and it went normally. I then put the 30gb back in as slave with no data on it but during reboots for loading drivers etc on the 20gb, the bios wouldn't recognize any hard drive at all. I had to do shutdown then startup to have it recognized.

I ran Norton disk doctor and scandisk on the 30gb and it would cause both programs to freeze. I then downloaded the disk utility from maxtor to check it and it passed all tests!

My last chore was to reformat and this time the disk integrity check would hang and kick back to 0%. This happened twice at 11% and twice at 68%.

I'm now ready to admit defeat and call maxtor tomorrow morning when they open unless someone has anything else I can try.

That sounds close to what was happening to my Maxtor 30GB 7200RPM drive. Windows installations would freeze at different points. At first, it passed all tests, but after a while, it crashed completely. I would get 50MB of bad clusters at a time, corrupted files, really bad stuff. Try a low-level format and try an fresh installation. If that doesn't work, then call Maxtor. They're pretty good about RMA's. If you have a credit card, they'll send you a replacement and give you 30 days to return the other one. Good luck to you.

I've already run the low level format on the powermax program and I just swapped it over to my BX mb where it only goes to 11% still on the verifying integrity portion of fdisk.

I'll call them tomorrow and get something going. I just sent my 40gb back on rma(6 weeks old) and now my 30gb! I'm down to 2 20's and a 40 with all my files.
