Hard drive about to die?

SAWYER

Lifer
I have an old Compaq with a Samsung hard drive. When windows goes to load I hear a clicking coming from my hard drive that is constant and happens at the same interval, about every 1-2 seconds. It isn't wanting to load up past the windows loading screen, it acts like it is but doesn't.

does it actually finish loading windows eventually? because if it doesn't then its not "about to", it already has.

anyways, is there an actual question there?

Sawyer, before you throw it in the recycle bin I would check to see if you have bad sectors in the hard drive. Run some programs like GWScan and do a deep scan and let it fix any errors. This sometimes resolved the problem on some of the PC's I have worked on in the past.

lots of bad sectors ARE a sign of drive failure though...

But you could try to fix it... A full format with windows 7 (so it writes 0s) and then a clean install should verify if its the HDD going bad or if windows just died...

however, he did specifically say that the drive is clicking (and I assume it means it didn't use to before). if a drive suddenly starts to click its a bad sign. (some drives alway click, its when a drive that didn't click suddenly starts to that you have a problem)
