Hard Drive A Gonner?

hello. i'm having a problem with my pc. it randomly hangs and sometimes when i restart it, the primary hard drive isn't detected. not too long ago when i turned on my computer, it said that there is an error is windows\system, please insert windowsxp cd and do a repair. it worked, but now the pc hangs. i notice that when it hangs, i hear a whirring sound coming from the hard drive. is this becasue it's dying or could it be something else?

my specs:
Abit NF7-S
Samsung 512mb ddr
20gb 5200rpm(?) primary
80gb 7200rpm slave
athlon xp-m 2500
raidmax case with 420 ps
radeon aiw 9600xt

Backup your data and then locate the manufacturer's testing utilities and test the drive. It sounds like it's dying though.
