hard disks and air travel

Wrong forum lurker.

And yes, the xrays will etch your platters rendering your data unrecoverable. This is how top secret data is intrusively destroyed on hdd's by governments.

He is mostly right. First, the machines read all the data off of the drive, and send it to the FBI. That way they can come after you for all of your illegal software and mp3 downloads. Then the machines kill your drive.

i did check google and there was nothing of any value there.

and i know this is the wrong forum, i jus thought this is the most read one so sum1 is bound to help me out.

will the x ray machines or metal dectctors damage my disk?

Yes - every one of the millions of laptops that have gone through security has been rendered useless. The fact that we have heard nothing about it just shows the scope of the cover up.

whats the procedure then???

i have carried external usb hard drives with me in carry ons, they just xray it with everything else, no problems

They'll think its a bomb. Heck a laptop with a dead battery might be a bomb since it can't turn on. I bet security has never seen a bare hard drive before.

okay so what if i pack it really well and send it off with the luggage and not keep it with me as a carry on....
will the disk be fine then??

i dont think they scan the luggage with and harm causing things////

Yup, I have my laptop + an external 2.5" for tunes and stuff...both go through no problems. Haven't lost data *yet*, but it could happen...and not just from that.

it could get stolen
it would be fine in checked bags also, but you have the risk of the baggage guys stealing it

if it isn't really valuable, you can check it. if it is either expensive or contains valuable data, then keep it with you in a carry on
