hard disk problem - smart sensors, defrag, chdisk

sorry, this may be a simple problem but am not a computer buff so need help!!

have 2 separate hard disks installed. couple of days ago, my hdd pro suddenly stopped working, with an error message 'no HDDs with SMART'. thought it was a smart software problem so installed speedfan but nothing comes up under the smart tab.

tried chdisk all disk partitions but got error 'windows was unable to complete the disk check'. tried defrag all drives but got error 'disk defragmenter could not start'.

any ideas? thanx
