I hope someone out there can lend me their insight into my problem at the moment :[

I tried to upgrade a PII 400 to PIII 550 katmai on a MS 6147 motherboard earlier today - It resulted in the PSU smoking up ! :[

the pII dying isn't much of a loss to me but I really want to recover the data off the 2 HDs that were in the PII machine. The problem is whenever I plug these HDs into another machine they wont boot up (both machines have 300w psu's).

Firstly i wonder why my PII psu blew up :[ and also why any pc that i connect the HDs to wont boot with them in.

Thanks in advance guys :]

If it is just the data that is important to you, either try 'slaving the hdds' in another system (make sure the jumper on the drive is set to slave), that way you boot into another computer using their hdd, then you can go into WINDOWS EXPLORER to look through your hdds.
I trust you didn't have MS encryption set up on your drives - unlikely, but if you did, then it is a completely different problem.

Another way is just to get a USB external hdd caddy - this way you don't have to open up the case, just plug hdd into caddy, and caddy into any system to get your data off.
Note: XP can see FAT 16 and FAT 32 and NTFS, I think Vista may not be able to see FAT16 - but not completely sure.

Try slaving out just one drive at a time. Make sure to set the master/slave jumpers accordingly. If it still doesn't work, drop back 10 and punt........

Try unplugging the optical drives when you are doing it, unless of course you want to back up to DVD

did you make absolutely sure the board would accept that processor, and the place/person you received it from was 100% sure it was not bad?

yup i did make sure the mobo could accept the processer - although i didn't know the condition since i got it from work, where we have a big pile of p3s dumped in a big box together.

yeah I re-read and made sure I saw that, hopefully they're not dead, but it could have wiped everything out.

it should not cause it any harm, and if it's not been damaged, then I'd get the files you need off of it as fast as possible.

ah no luck with the usb enclosure :[

i opened the smaller hd up and i noticed on the pcb that one of the chips has a giant hole in it

anyone know a good place for 2nd hand/old hds other than ebay? I'm located in the uk. - I'm going to try replacing the logic board next.

that will nto work and at best you'll get garbage you'd have to find a exact series, date and model drive to pull the board from. the money would be better spent on another drive. I've had a 0.5% success rate when trying to used another board to access the HDD, because each board handles the drive they are paired with slighly different than the next in how it reads, writes, tracks, etc.

if the board burnt out, that means the PSU and motherboard took a very powerful spike or surge, they best be getting another pc.

yeah I'm definitely extremely lucky, I pulled off all the files i needed and the drive seems to be working still

I paid $50 total for the drive (40gb) $38 for international shipping :S

This is how closely they match :D - what are the chances of me finding this close a match just after my hd died :)
