At the post screen I get this error but windows 7-64bit still starts up. My hard drive tends to be extra noisy these days also. Could my 6 year old 250gb western digital HD be dying?

If your motherboard has multiple SATA/IDE controllers, then this message might be coming from an add-on BIOS module that handles the extra controller.

For example, I know that on an Abit IP35-E, there is a Jmicron screen after the main BIOS screen, that will say something to this effect when there are no drives plugged in to the Jmicron ports.

I remember on my old Dell desktop running into this. It had 2 IDE ports. When you install a new drive, you're suppose to set the drive controller in the BIOS to 'auto.' After the 1st post and detection of the new drive, you go back into the BIOS then set all those ports that didn't detect anything back to none otherwise it'll continue to scan for new drives and will toss up that 'disk not detected' for ports with nothing found. Best of luck.
