Ok, so the deal is that my Hitachi 180GXP is making scratchy noises when my system is booted. Once its been on for a bit the noise no longer persists. I have noticed no slowdown and is otherwise just fine. I am backing up ALL my data though. I'm waiting for it to die before I do any upgrading (and I'm waiting for my paycheck).
Since my system is nearing it's 2nd birthday in February, I could perhaps do with an upgrade...
- MSI nForce2 (K7N2-L: first revision with 333FSB support, no SATA)
- Athlon XP TBredB 2100+ @ 2700+ (2.17GHz)
- 1GB RAM in DC: 2x256MB Crucial PC2100 @ PC2700, 1 x 512MB Crucial PC3200 @ PC2700
- Radeon 9800 Pro
- Hitachi 180GXP
I wanna keep:
- Radeon 9800 pro - I don't really play games so often so I would like to stick with it for now.
- PSU: TT Purepower 420W - this should be enough.
- Case: Chieftec Dragon DX
- I have an Audigy2 so I'm not too bothered by onboard sound.
- I have all the optical drives I require.
I would like some decent OC potential. I was thinking of getting an nForce3 (as soon as my HD goes bust!), so that I could use the AGP slot.
1. How does this sound?
- MSI K8N2 Platinum S939 (nForce3 Ultra)
- Athlon 64 3200+ 90nm Winchester
- 1GB RAM in DC: 2x512MB Crucial PC3200 (Using one of the sticks I already have)
- Seagate 7200.(7/8) 200GB SATA
This comes out to £305 (+17.5%Tax).
2. Which HSF should I get? I have a TT K7 SilentBoost, which I know I can't use now.
3. I wanna OC sometime in the future, let's say to 2.6GHz. That's 260Mhz for 1:1 RAM! I assume my PC3200 Crucial RAM can't get there, so by running it a lower speed how detrimental will it be? With the nForce2 it was pretty bad.
Cheers for the help guys.
