Hard disk lifetime?

Anyone know how long a hard disk can sit on the shelf unopened and unused before it goes bad? I have several disks that I bought because they were on sale cheap and I got caught up in the sales frenzy. I really dont need them right now and probably wont be using them for 2 to 4 years. These are IDE drives from Seagate & Western Digital and Maxtor. Thanks.

i think wear of a hard drive is from use so they should be ifne.

Should be good for "a while" (years, yes -- decades, no), as long as they are stored in reasonable conditions (sub-zero cold or sitting in your car in 100-plus degree heat = bad). You could try writing or calling up the manufacturer to see if they could give you an estimate.

2-4 years? IMO I would try to sell them and make a little money. By the time you are ready to use this, let's say 4 years, technology would have made them almost obsolete. What do you know, maybe 2-3 years from now we could all be wanting to use the new SSD's storage drives.

Good point, I agree.
