Wouldnt be a big problem except that everything pauses for a couple of seconds...even as I typed the message title, i could hear the hard disk (maxtor 200 GB) spin up ....right here for 2 seconds ....i hear a whine as the disk spins up...this has started happening in the last week or so (running vista 32 bit on core 2 duo e6400 with 2 gb ram and a 8800 GTS 640MB).
This is especially annoying while gaming since I cant do anything for a couple of seconds every 2 minutes. This is baffling to me. My hard disk is defragged every week.

Any ideas ? Please help

Thanks

Turn off power savings. It causes the drive to spin down, then something like your index service wakes it

That was indeed the ticket. Thanks Radicl. For others who might run into this, you have to dig through a set of power saving settings. There is one specifically for hard drive power usage. I turned it to its most inefficient and lo and behold..no more spin up !
