Hard disk faliure

I recently had a hard drive fail on me (it make a clicking noise whenever I tried to boot up and gave me a boot disk error) is there anyway of getting data off of it that will not cost me thousands?
 
If you have one available or can borrow a friend's, stick it in a working machine (making sure of proper jumper locations) and see if windows sees it so you can possibly pull some data off of it
