Hard Disk dust ??

I have an uncle, who is quite experienced in Computers & networking (network admin in a UN setup)....he has the following opinion about HDs...

I am gonna be importing the HD and the DVD Burner from USA to my country (Pakistan), along with all the other components...he says i shouldnt get the HD from USA, cuz the HDs sold in USA are customized for US soil...whereas the ones sold in Pakistan, are meant for places where there is more dust in the air....

what he means to say is, is that the HDs in Pakistan have tougher protection against dust that cud possibly slip into the HD, reducing its efficiency....such HDs are made in taiwan, etc...for countries where there is more dust....e.g. Pakistan, India, etc...

cuz of this, says is recommending me to buy the DVD Burner and the HD locally.....

I think the reason is satisfactory, but thought maybe askin u guys is a good option as well.. 😛

That sounds like bullshit. Since the hdd are sealed anyways, the amount of dust in the air shouldn't affect the performance of the hard drive, same with the burner.

hmm......r u sure ? cuz my educated guess tells me this might be right...cuz the HD price locally is higher..(probably cuz of better protection )...

If you want to spend more money to keep your uncle happy, then go ahead.
Just make sure you know what you are buying, hard drives are not made in garages.

Do you really think companies build different hard drives for different countries? Take an economics class before u build another computer.

Hi, Contrary to most beliefs Hard Drives are not Hermitically Sealed. They usually have an air vent protected by a dust filter. Take a look next time you open one for repair.
