No matter what I'm doing on my computer, there's always hard disk activity going on. A lot of the time it goes in a sort of rythm, doing that hard disk sound every second or so. It even does this when I just leave it there. What's it doing?

I'm using:
Windows XP Pro
Western Digital SE 80GB
AthlonXP Palomino
KT400 chipset mobo

System Restore? Check in My Computer as Administrator to see if that's enabled. Or, not knowing you, it's hard to tell if you have 23 plus a gazillion other things running in your system tray. If that's the case, then close all the sh!t and see if that solves your problems. ;)

Check a couple of other things too:

1) look at your LAN lights. is anything going out to the internet when you're not meaning for it to?
2) run a good virus/trojan scanner (Norton AV or even a free online one... though, you get what you pay for sometimes).
3) go to start--> run--> and type in msconfig this will show you all the crap that loads with windows. if ya see anything that shouldnt be there, uncheck it (SaveNow, etc.). some things will hide themselves pretty well (mouse.exe, for example could be legit, or it could be a trojan). post back with any suspicious files or just do a google on them and see if any hits come up.
