Happy with Vista! Am I in the minority?

so, like most nerds I have been hesitant to "upgrade" to Vista because of all the negative press surrounding it.

well, i just built a new computer. a q6600 quad cpu, with asus mobo, and geforce 800gts 320...

i couldnt be happier. vista runs smoothly and fast as hell. the ONLY single problem ive had so far was that creative did not have a driver for my webcam, so i had to buy a new webcam. whatever.

the only other gripe i have with vista, is that on copying/moving files, the progress bar seems to lag. it says "preparing to copy/move" forever, and then all of a sudden the bar fills up super quickly, like most of the copying/moving is done during the prep phase.

am i in the minority? or does vista just run well when you have an entirely new computer? i built this thing and i love it. can't wait for SP1.

i have run vista at my office, for testing software i wrote (vista compatibility is , well some things are a little different).

that said, with a fairly modern computer, i dont think its that bad. like if someone made me use a vista computer all day i wouldnt complain. just it doesnt seem to be any improvement over xp for most people on the surface. the security model is a lot better though.

i once ranted here, about how the UAC thing was stupid and annoying. then i wrote some system services, and realized well, just how bad xp's security is. i have to credit "bsobel" here for showing me the light.

I have it at home and I actually wrote a pretty nice blog supporting it on my Myspace page. Very few things I don't like: UAC is annoying, file copying or browsing takes a while. Other than that I can't think of anything I don't like. I think most people are annoyed that you have to have a new computer to experience vista to the fullest. Everyone I talk to that is complaining has some kinda single core processor with a gig of ram and ya no wonder it's going to run bad, it is not XP. I have heard the file copying thing is fixed with SP1 as people have already confirmed this with SP1 RC1. I like how it detects your PnP devices better and actually finds drivers for them. I have yet to find any incompatable software and I'm using the x64 version.

I installed Vista a few weeks ago, was getting BSODs right out of the box with no drivers installed. Tried 3 or 4 different installs with different drivers, same BSODs. Went back to using just XP. Installed Vista again yesterday, was getting "file / disk corrupted" almost as soon as my desktop would hit. I'd reboot to a super long 5 stage chkdsk run that did all kinds of crap. Tried 2 different HD's, 2 different IDE cables. Same crap. Meanwhile my XP on the same PC & same HD has no problems. I wished I could like Vista, but it just doesn't like me or my computer.

glad you're not having problems with it man 🙂

yeah, i think vista is great for people with a brand spanking new computer. my computer is a freakin powerhouse and vista runs soooo smooth on it. one big thing i love is how easily networks are configured. i was able to setup sharing with the other computers and my xbox 360 soooo fast. no complaints here. i would tell most people to stick with xp unless they have a brand new computer...

Nope, I love it too. I just found the speech recognition engine last week, now I'm having way too much fun with the machine.

Nope, I like it just fine. I don't mind UAC. Sure some niche programs might not be designed with it in mind which can cause problems...but I've dropped most of all those types of programs anyway. Vista has been rock solid for me from day one.

Ooh, I keep forgetting to play with that.

turning UAC off basicly turns of Vista's most important security feature... I would call it dumb to do so

Welcome to the wide world of Vista. I've been using it for a year and couldn't ask for more out of it.

I like Vista also, but i would not put it on my laptop as old hardware should stick with old OS. If others would think about this a little there would be a lot less people bitching about vista vs XP. To me my home computer is much faster in vista for "most" things. I immediately went to vista from XP where it took me SP2 to go from win2k to winXP.

And why not...? How old is your laptop...?

See the Sempron "powerhouse" in my sig...?

I've been running Vista HP on it since March 2007 without any issues.

Hard to say if 'we' are in the minority, but I LOVE Vista, since the first time I ran it!

And, if YOU love Vista, as much as I do, you're gonna cream yourself over SP1! 😉

I like it well enough - but it seemed expensive for what it is. There's too many versions and the high-end versions are too expensive given what they are. $300 for Vista Ultimate Retail Upgrade? I think Microsoft would have a lot more happy customers if they cut their prices in half.

if i had 2GB then i would think about it.
Laptop = 1.7 Pent-M w/1GB of RAM. Personally i don't think 1GB is good enough for vista, i don't even like 1GB for WinXP for my typical work load lol.

Correct. It did not run well with only 1GB of RAM installed, even in XP. Especially with 128MB taken for the integrated graphics.

Guess your laptop chipset supports only 1GB of RAM...? Because the CPU is fine.

I am quite happy with Vista. I have been using it since July of 2006 on my main PC (custom built) and my notebook PC (HP NC6000).

I still have XP-SP3 loaded on my wife's PC because she doesn't use her PC much and I would have to reload all her software (which I don't want to do).

Edit: I should add that even though my notebook was made in 2004 it runs Vista just fine. I did upgrade the processor to a Pentium M 765 (2.1GHz), bumped the memory up to 2GB and replaced the hard drive with a 7,200 rpm model. The video (Radeon 9600 Mobil 32MB) is not upgradeable, but runs the aero glass just fine with no slowdown.

My sis got a new laptop (Pentium T2310, 2GB, Intel X3100) with Vista Home Premium and I have a week to figure it out and explain things to her before she goes away. I'd say she's an Intermediate-level user (WinXP) and I'm close to an expert with XP. So far (about 20 hours), I have found Vista pretty intuitive and have only had to scratch my head once or twice. There are some aspects where I think changes have been made just for the heck of it but I like it overall. Of course, this isn't a gaming notebook so no comments on that. But I fail to see how the average ATOTer would have a problem working around the new interface.

And why does IE7 render pages wicked fast compared to XP? I am really digging IE7 on this thing. Everything feels snappier (even Adobe Reader 8) and I wouldn't have any second thoughts disabling User Account Control. My sis isn't the kind of person that installs malware from suspicious warez sites but I guess I should leave it enabled just in case.

Media Center looks pretty awesome (can't compare it to Media Center 2005 - no experience with that).

Just had two issues so far:
-> Windows Explorer only displayed the first session of a multi-session DVD-R. Had to install ISObuster to access the files I had added to the disc in later sessions. My first reaction was, "WTF, Vista sucks!" but a bit of Googling suggested this might be more of an issue with certain optical drives rather than the OS. Some people even seem to have this with XP. This notebook has a Optiarc drive.
-> Unzipping seems to take much longer than XP. I mean, just unzipping the CPU-Z zip file I had downloaded took a few seconds, something that is instantaneous on my lowly XP rigs. Maybe installing 7-Zip will help? Currently using the built-in Windows tool.

I like it so far. Runs pretty freaking awesome on what is a $550 laptop.

no it support more, it just cost to damn much to buy two 1GB DDR sticks for this lappy.
