Usually celebrated on the 21st of March, which this year is the official first FULL day of spring, although spring came early this morning!

I celebrated this with my Persian friends last night. There was some confusion on the date though.

I used to have an Iranian co-worker who would bring in great food for New Years. :) Then I changed jobs. :( My theory is that the UN would operate much more smoothly if they held weekly potlucks.

Happy Iranian New Year?

No, not all Iranians are Persians.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/persian

Relevant definition:

a member of one of the peoples forming the modern Iranian nationality

Well there's Ethnic Iranian and non-ethnic iranians living in Iran.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/iranian

I love dictionaries:

a native or inhabitant of Iran

If I put one white guy in China can we no longer call it Chinese New Year because not everybody in China is Chinese?

No you can't because it's called Lunar New Year.

I never said a non-persian living in Iran isn't called an Iranian. Analog and I are saying it's Persian New Year, not Iranian New Year.

persia is, historically, a small part of iran (around shiraz, where the capital of the persian empire, persepolis, was located). internally, the country has known itself as iran (or, land of the aryans, which describes the ethnicity of most people living there) for a long, long time.

iirc, new year based on the spring equinox is traditional in central asia.

in england new year was traditionally celebrated on march 25 (lady day), which is pretty darn close to the equinox. afaik, school terms are still set up around the historical quarter year days (lady day, midsummer's day, michaelmas, and christmas)

Is this what you're referring to? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nowruz

"the traditional Iranian new year holiday"

I was under the impression that Iran is a modern day country and Nowruz was an ancient Persian holiday.

QFT.

I am Persian. My grandparents were Persian and Iranian. To me, an Iranian is a citizen of Iran, which I am not. Not meant to be a big debate on definitions. Happy New Year!

I don't think it's Persian new year. I think it's just Parsi new year. I assume the Iranians now use whatever calendar the Arabs do.

Everyone from Iran calls themselves Persian. There is really no distinction.

The only people who probably won't call themselves Persian are the Jews.
