why do Indians celebrate a day that caused their country to go downhill? British left along with technology and investment capital, and then came socialism and mass poverty.

well of course indian history books will tell the story in their way, but imagine if the british had stayed, brought in western technologies, alliances, and investment capital during the 50 years following 1947. Pakistan would be no competition. It would be like South Korea except with like 1 billion people.

 to civil disobediance and independence :)

we are peace loving people... If you read about Indian history, India has never invaded any country...

you need to reread history ... especially on panchsheel and this time read it unbiased ... and oh ... chinese kicked indian asses twice .. yet its not so bluntly written in indian textbooks .. yet indian books keep boasting how we defeated pakis ... then again, thats true for almost all countries ...

also how is india a peace loving nation ... before the britishers India was broken up into little kingdoms / countries just like europe and fighting/ invading each other constantly .. so are you saying Indians suddenly turned peaceful after it became a united nation??? what was sardar vallabh bhai patel doing ... he was putting a fighting nations together into one ... what about all those clashes over sharing of river waters etc. in the early days ... never mind ... oh and why were indian forces in sri lanka fighting ltte in the beginning .. peaceful existence ... sure ... one of the major reasons for China to change its stance on NPT was Rajiv Gandhi in '88 promoting nukes ....... (and to be fair China prompted most of it) ... after 59 years ... try googling female infanticide and see how many indian references come up ... and peace loving nation ... sure .. when riots flare up so often ....

As I understand it, India was basically supporting the rest of England's empire ambition for a good bit of time. The British gave India the railroad system (financed by India's wealth) while taking the rest of the production returns and wealth out of the country. They did unite the kingdoms into two countries, and modernized them to a degree, but they were far from an end all be all force of pure benevolence for India or any other region they controlled. None of the European powers were good to their colonies but it's ok cause now you have awesome monuments to how great Europe is financed by the blood and sweat of their subject peoples...I mean "Go India!"
