w00t! Happy Diwali!

'course, the debate seems to be which day to celebrate it - today or tomorrow. I think most of the world is celebrating it today, but the US is celebrating it primarily tomorrow.

...And a Happy Diwali to you too! :D

Um, what's "Diwali"?

(My personal knowledge of Hindi consists merely of knowing how to say "hello!", "have you eaten?", and "let's go!")

It's the 'Festival of Lights'.

Its kinda what Christmas is to you guys...not exactly similar but we celebrate it with the same rigour.

Yep. It's kinda funny cause in the multicultural town which is my home, it seems as though christmas lights are up already... :)

I like miri piri day better... free food on the streets along with the parade.

In Trinidad, everyone spelled it "Divali" but pronounced it "Diwali". Also, people of all religions lit the lamps.. what were they called? Begins with a "d" I think... Whatever. I can't remember after 7 years.

I wonder how many actually know how much fun diwali can be in India (and else where).

I think I may go celebrate with some of my left over fireworks (tiny ones) from 4th of july a couple of years ago.

Anyway happy diwali guys.. anyway in our house the tradition was sweets and kheer. Ofcourse waking up at 4 AM with the biggest bang.. needless to say I grew up in southern india where the start it in the morning (officially) before some religious stuff but I would start it the previous night with a few small things, then the next morning with all teh heavy bombs (knock out bangs were my favorites, then came the H2's, and the Atom Silver Special). Ofcourse we would leave one of the Jumping Jacks (LAR's) for later in the morning around 7am. Around 9 we go for sweets to our friends / neighbours place, and by 11 we are throwing bijili's since its started raining (well diwali always came around when it rained for us). That evening I would fire off my rockets, and other colorful stuff. Later on i would take some of teh stuff to another friends place and we would fire off like 200+ rockets (a whole bunch of us would be there).

Mind you this was the way I blew my parents money when I was in India. Buying and Bursting fireworks is an absolute burn of money.

Not 100% sure of the spelling, but they're called dias. (dee-yas)

I think the convention is to spell it diya .. I think the s at the end might be an Americanization that came about when we tried to figure out how to make it plural.

Yes dias.. I was thinking that but wasn't sure and didn't want to look like an ass :). We used to line them up around the house. Playing with fire is fun.
