Went with telus.net's consumer package in Vancouver, Canada.

1500 Kbit down, 512 Kbit up
transfer limit (unenforced): 5 GB down, 1 GB up
3 email addresses
free ADSL modem rental

$40 a month, $50 installation
( that's 27 bucks a month in US dollars :p )

You'll have to forgive me if I don't have that same zest for winmodem debates I once did ;)

You're in Vancouver too? How is Telus's service, and how long did you have to wait before they installed it?

;) One of my friends signed up for Telus DSL in march, and yesterday got moved up from 16,000th on the waiting list to within 400 because his dad is a Telus employee. I wonder how long I'd have to wait if I wanted to get it installed. (I'm thinking of getting the small business package so that I can host websites legally).

lucky you :)

I'm getting 384k/384k soon, it's free to set up (just gotta pay for netcard), and it's $50 a month.....which is VERY cheap compared to the $120 I paid to get ISDN set up + $60 a month for flat rate :)

damn 1500/512! here I can get 2000/512 for a $250 setup fee and $120 a month :|

Overall, Telus' service was good. Because I live in Guildford (Surrey) and my nieghborhood is fairly recent, there were ports open only two months after I got on the waiting list. The installation guy was fast and fairly knowledgable.

I've only had two problems. First, they didn't email me like they said they would when they were ready to take me. It's a good thing I phoned them and bugged them every week. Second, after the line filters were placed in the box outside, my phone line sounds, oddly enough, much more noisy. There is a barely audible hiss over voice conversations. And the 56k in the other room ( winmodem of course, HSP Motorola no less :) ) now only connects at 42k whereas he used to get 49k. But since we'll be getting a hub and a second NIC shortly, the little added line noise isn't a big deal.

Pocatello,

<<Software modems suck compare to real modems.>>

No, I refuse to be drawn into a modem argument today. Better things to do :)

Burn,

<<WINMODEMS ARE SUCK!!!>>

No! Please! Must. . . not. . . debate. . . winmodems. . . Must. . . move on. . . with. . . my life. . .

Not anywhere close to you guys. (Closer to the Great Tanned South that is Mexico) But, I have 384/128K service from a comp. called Jump.Net. I must say it is GREAT! It's pricey (63 bucks a month for 2 IPs and capped uploads) but I've never used my quota and it feels faster than any direct connection I've used anywhere. (Including at work and I work for a fiber optic telecom company!)

I love how ADSL often downloads much faster than the guaranteed rate. Mine usually does about 1280Kbps max which is probably the physical limit of my local loop. Sure beats my old cable modem and *gasp* my POS modem.
