I'm not Jewish and I'm not an employee of any government organization so I've never had that day off. Your whine is falling on deaf ears.

If you want to celebrate then take the day(s) off yourself.

how come this isnt a federal holiday and why am i still at work?

Because this isn't China? Geez, you'd think this would be painfully obvious.

Then why is the Jewish New Year celebrated. Not that I don't enjoy another holiday, but it seems hypocritical.

I'm sorry if that came off the wrong way. I'm not lobbying for making the Chinese New Year a holiday, nor do I think celebrating a Jewish holiday is a smart thing to do. Federal holidays should be limited to specific events/people that were critical to the development of America. I was just pointing out how broken the system currently is with letting some groups have their holidays vs others.

Year of the rat, I presume?

Gung hai fat choi.

BTW, it is a national holiday in China and they usually take a week or more off.

I always say Happy Lunar New Year because not just Chineses, others celebrate Lunar New Year too.

I spent some money (li xi) last night for my nieces and nephew....also sent some money back home for mom and sister...they may ask for euros if the dollars keep failing.

No worries. I didn't mean to suggest that this holiday isn't important. Just that this isn't China and to expect Americans to honor all national holidays isn't very realistic. Honestly, I'm against adding more federal holidays because that would just be one more day when the banks are closed, the mail isn't delivered and my wife or I have to take time off to watch our son because his school is closed.

Sorry if my post came off as inconsiderate. I'll edit them, as they are kind of off the topic of this thread.

BTW-Happy New Year!

From Wikipedia's entry on Clothing for Chinese New Year:

In addition, people typically wear new clothes from head to toe to symbolize a new beginning in the new year.

And from the Chinese Culture Center in San Francisco's page Celebration of the Chinese New Year (from the section "Lai-see"):

On New Year?s day, everyone had on new clothes, and would put on his best behavior.
