Our Canada Day was a little more exciting than usual weather-wise. A brief but intense thunderstorm swept through a part of this city in late afternoon, including a fast downburst with winds nearly 100 Km/hr that blew down trees in our area. I was in the back yard putting burgers on the BBQ despite the rain when it hit. In the middle there was a sudden crack and some Cedar tree tops fell down about 3 m (10 ft) from me. No injuries, just tree damage in our yard. But right next door their huge Spruce tree (about 20" - 24" at the base) broke right off about 5 feet from the ground. Fortunately it fell into a relatively clear space in their yard and over our rear fence, so no big damage. But this will cost them and us each a few thousand $$ to get cleared away. There are reports and a few photos of funnel clouds near this city at that time. We do NOT normally get weather that severe, and never have had a tornado here, so this has been NEWS locally.
