I bought my Sony D-50 cd player at a px while stationed in the Army in Germany 20 years ago. It still works to this day. :)

:music::beer:

The model number supposedly identifies it as a home market (Japanese) model, and it's kind of rare now. Said to be the world's first PCDP, along with it I got the "powershell" dock that takes something like 6 c cells to play for at best a couple of hours. Fortunately I still have the ac base as well. I also saved the original documentation.

These early ones have a better dac than later models, although I can't say how it compares to new stuff. I'm sure there are bigger geeks than I am who know all about that stuff.

By the way, the first CD I bought for it was Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms.

You really did get your money's worth. Btw do you remember how much that cost you at the time?

My dad told me about listening to the first ever sony walkman to hit the shores; he knew the person who brought it over from japan before it was retail (pops wokred at the INS things at the airport). It was stereo, and wore through batteries every hour. Dad tells me the tape was a recording of an airplane flying by from left to right, to realize the effects of the stereo. Heh kinda funny because he'd listen to it hours on end.

Thanks for the pic links NFS4. That's it alright :)

SZLiao214: Oddly enough I don't recall what it cost back then. It's remotely possible that I still have the receipt with the literature though.

Zim Hosein: Indeed, there are audio buffs that love this kinda stuff, and it's possible it would fetch a good price. I don't ebay, but maybe someday I'd consider selling it.

Edit: a fair question logic1485. I no longer have that CD. Long story, hehe...

To ansawer your question, new PDCD players SUCK. You might be interested in head-fi.com.

I think there is an old school Denon player that is referred to as the best ever. And it sells for $200-$300 used. And it's liek a 15 year old player! Had DACS for left andrigth channels and is supopsed to be the best sound in a portable.. And yes, the older SOny's are almost as good. better than anything today except for maybe the $1,000 models. Yes they exist.

FYou could sell that for ALOT if you are willing to part with it. Probably $100+

Oh, I also have an old school componenet at work I got on EBay for $27 shipped. It was an $800 kyocera back in the day. Sound is alright. Probably comprable to a low end unit today, but for alot less cash.

Best CD player deal today requies mods. $70 Toshiba with mods gives you the sound quality of a $400 player! Just doesn't have as good of a transport, etc.

Don't sell it, those early Sony PCDP's are gems.

Modern PCDP's are garbage in comparison. Underpowered in favor of battery life, and generally poor audio components.

OK, if you do sell it I want first crack at it.

OT: Woah, I wonder what the specs are on the HD Trinitron from 1990... I'd actually love to see one of those up close.

Very interesting feedback, thanks guys.

Believe me I wouldn't let it go cheap if I did sell it. Almost nobody would still have the amount of documentation and accessories complete as I do :)

Yep. In fact, I even have a Philips CM-100 CD-ROM drive (and proprietary controller), which was the first commercially available computer CD-ROM, and it's from 1985. Audio CD players had been around for a while before then.
