This isn't January 1st, the day that mod thread was created. It is January 3rd. Even if you did not understand WHY January 1st was a problem, there is no reason to assume that "today" means every day from now on.

January first's forum-generated birthday list erroneously contained tens of thousands of names and created havoc on the forums. The ATOT birthday list is unrelated to that list, so the ATOT birthday thread from that day was not locked, just the ones that were made by people farking around posting the goofed up list.
