I'm looking for a new monitor. I use a Panasonic 21" CRT monitor now. I mainly do webdesign, graphic design, and some games (mainly Counter Strike Source). I would LOVE to get a 30" Dell but I dont want to spend near that much money right now. I've heard good things about the Hanns·G HG-281DPB Black 28" Monitor, that for the money ($500ish)that it's the best around. But i also am wondering if i should get the Dell 24" for $500ish instead? Any advice? Any other monitors I should consider? I have a ATI 800xl vid card now, but will be getting 8800 GT if i get a new monitor.

Thanks

That Hanns-G 28" monitor uses a TN panel. At that size the TN viewing angle issue will be quite noticeable.

Its a good monitor for gaming and such but for graphic designing, the colour reproduction will not be up to that standard of a *VA panel.
Also the fact that you are coming from a CRT, you might be left with a very bad taste in your mouth.

What would you suggest to get?

I've considered:

Soyo 24"
Acer 24"
and of course the Dell 24" - 30" but they are kinda too pricey for me right now.

I use the Hann-G 28" monitor at work everyday, and I have the Soyo at home. For work, I really like the Hanns-G. Don't worry about viewing angles, it's really a non-issue with this display. The pixel size is a bit large, but my eyes are perfect anymore, so the large pixels reallyhelp me out. We use this monitor at tradeshows as our main display, and viewing angles haven't be an issue.

The Soyo 24" is also very good, and slightly better for movies, and a bit better for games. I've been meaning to take the Hanns-G home for a few days and compare it to the Soyo side by side, but haven't yet. The viewing angles (horinzontal) are a little better on the Soyo, but I don't find that to be a factor, at least in my use of both LCDs. The Soyo is great for $299. The only downside is that the Soyo seems to take some time to warm up before the colors look right. It starts off with all colors looking a bit blueish.

i have both monitors: the Soyo 24" (wife's 'puter) and the Hanns-G 28" (my 'puter) and can attest to how nice they both are. The Hanns-G has a better warranty (3yrs) :)

I'm all over the place with trying to decide which monitor to upgrade my 17" CRT to.....

The Hanns-G 28" (though TN) is looking better and better. I have some questions:

1) How does it perform with fast paced games and movies (any ghosting)?
2) What is the viewing angle situation with it (how good or bad are they)?
3) How good is the colour reproduction?

my games look great (crysis / quake iv / bf2142) no ghosting. using dvi-hdmi cable
viewing angles -- not an issue for me since i usually sit directly in front of my monitor! :)
colors look just as nice as my Soyo 24"

Best 24" on the market, better then Dell's and a lot better then the others you mentioned. Also better then nearly all of the bigger LCD's I've seen

I read that the new model FP241WZ is better?

They made some improvements, yes - alot of people were after the "Z" model initially because of some the inherrant flaws in the firmware of the original. All of those flaws have been fixed and if you order from NCIX you get the latest firmware on your monitor which is Sept 2007. All of the changes are described throughout the NCIX forums of this monitor. You can also do a lot of reading about it in the Newegg reviews and the HardForums have a huge thread on this monitor. Basically when the monitor first came out it didn't do 1:1 pixel scaling, which has been fixed in the firmware for a long time.

The FP241W is quite a bit less and I don't think the "Z" is worth the premium.

I can tell you that both are QUITE a bit better then any other monitor in this thread, its just a matter of if its worth the premium over TN panels in your opinion. I game on a TN panel so I can tell you that the viewing angles are horrible and the color isn't near as good. I don't do graphics though I game so for me my TN works out fine. The guy who said that viewing angles isn't an issue on the Hans-G, well it just depends. As long as your right in front of it all the time then you probably won't care but I can tell you that the viewing angles are horrible on this monitor just like any TN. For most people the viewing angle on a computer monitor should matter little if any at all, but you'll just need to keep it in mind.

Love my hanns g so much I got a 24 for the gf! Came from a Dell ultrasharp 2001fp and actually run them side by side now when multitasking. Stock settings on the Hanns G were a little bright so after lowering it to about 65% brightness it looks great. Haven't changed colors or contrast at all.

I pretty much agree with SpineJam - I don't notice any ghosting (at least compared to other LCDs) on teh Hanns-G. I don't see the viewing angle being a problem - a bigger problem is how big the screen is! If you maximize a Word document, you need to physcially move your head around the page. I tend to not to maximize windows as much with the 28" Hanns-G. Color reproduction is fine. The only thing I've noticed is that contrast is slightly better with my 24" Soyo - this is only a factor during dark areas of a game. Overall, I think the Soyo is better bang for the buck (screen area for dollar). The Hanns-G seems to be more solidy built than the Soyo, with a much better base.

if you are a graphics designer than you can not really skimp on the monitor... LCDs have some issues with both display angle and color reproduction that CRTs did not. There are solutions, but they cost..
I am sorry that I cannot recommend anything... but I would do some serious research and also test out a few of those monitors if I were you...

Also, buy them from costco.com
I went thorough 5 monitors, until I settled on my 24inch Dell Ultrasharp (700$, but those 300$ 24 inchers just weren't cutting it)
And I had 90 days (they might have shortened it since, but its still gonna be pretty generous) to return each one at any costco store I want, with no questions asked, for full refund INCLUDING shipping price (if I remember correctly...).

I would completely avoid the normal favorites for buying computer hardware online... they are ALL doing nasty things like "no returns unless you have 8 or more deal pixels" and other crap like that.

Its really odd that costco had so many sub par monitors for sale though.. don't those people understand the concept of money back guarantee? I could buy somewhere where I have a LOT more options to choose from at better rates, like newegg.com
But I buy it from costco because they promise me that their monitor is so perfect, that I am gonna love it and not want to give it back... a try it before you buy it deal...
And then I get some crappy sceptre thats downright atrocious, and what do I do? return it... I was promised perfection, you cannot guilt trip me into keeping it otherwise.

Although in retrospect... Those monitors cost less than half what I ended up paying... so I guess at that price level they weren't sub par...

I was thinking of getting one so I can dual monitor. I have a nice 22" for gaming, but I would like to use this one because I'm starting to get into Forex trading and it would be nice to have charts on especially at that price.

I went to Best Buy locally and they never heard of Hanns.. LOL... but it's on BB's website. I went ahead and took talltamir's advice and ordered the Hanns 28" from costco since i can return it if i dont like it. I saw the 24" Gateway FHD2400 in Best Buy and i have to say, it blew every other monitor in there away! I hope the Hanns looks as good as that Gateway did. Does the Dell look as good as that Gateway FHD2400? It was sweet. Nothing in best buy looked near that good.
