Has anyone else read this? I just got done with it, and I'm not sure how much I liked it. The first time I saw The Silence of the Lambs, it disturbed me. After I read Hannibal, I felt disturbed (especially by one particular scene in the book), but I also felt alot of it was, well, corny. I went back and watched TSOTL again, and I noticed alot of the stuff I thought was disturbing was a little corny too. Tomorrow I'm going out and buying TSOL novel and Red Dragon, so I can see what they are like in print.

Anyone else read Hannibal? Opinions? Comments? What do you think the movie will be like without Jodie Foster?

EDIT: Those of you who have read it, please don't go into too much detail, so as not to spoil it for potential future readers!

I loved Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon, but IMO Hannibal was maybe the worst book I have read in the last 5 years. I found the whole thing just preposterous and pointless, and I do not blame Jodie Foster for refusing to participate in the movie.

Might I suggest the movie "Manhunter" with William Peterson. If I remember correctly, it is the prequel to SOTL....a great movie and one of my all-time favorites.

Oh my goodness, I agree with Tee completely for once :) Hannibal plain out sucked compared to TSOTL and Red Dragon.

The author chose not to use an editor with Hannibal -- he wanted to have it completely the way he wrote it (with Silence he had a good editor), and it completely shows. Everything in the book is predictable, corny, you don't get emotionally drawn in with any of the characters -- when you read the book you just don't "care" about the characters.

Silence was awesome in my opinion :)

I thought hannibal was one of the best monster books I have ever read. Plus knowing that it was not edited makes it better for me. I have already read the book three times and I am gonna read it again soon. Thomas Harris has only written four books, the guy is an enigma.

Red Dragon was great but a little less believable than TSOTL. Manhunter was also good and made by hollywood into something a lot less in the movie as is usually the case. Liked Hannibal but was a little disappointed after the long wait.

A good read like the above:

Kellermans new one MONSTER, (usually dont like his stuff)
John Sandfords PREY series, especially the older ones.
Some of Pattersons works.

Kathy Reichs and Jeffery Deaver also write about like subjects but wuth more emphasis on solving crimes with forensic analysis.

Lots of others.

I thought Silence of the Lambs, and Red Dragon were good, but Hannabal was just sick. You have to wonder if the guy that wrote that pos is all there... To even think of that kind of stuff is just disturbing.

Manhunter is a pretty neat, widely-overlooked movie; I love the director Michael Mann (the same guy who directed "Miami Vice" and "Heat"), and the closing scene with "Inna Gadda Da Vida" thundering is just amazing (albeit not as cool as the end of "Red Dragon").

Not to mention the touch that means so much: CHRIS ELLIOT!

The word on the streets is that there will be extensive script-doctoring to render "Hannibal" feasible for filming and more palatable to Jodie F. God knows it needs it - the book's plot is so reliant on horrific, gratiutous symbolic violence that I have a hard time imagining a feature made from it. (I am not squeamish about violence; it's just that nearly the entire book is so over the top that it seems far too gory for an R rating). We shall see.

Tee: Was Manhunter an adaptation of Red Dragon for the screen? I forget...I thought I heard that. Chris Elliot is in it? Is that the guy from SNL and Get A Life? I've got to see this. Maybe I'll go rent it. :)
