Hangs/Freezes on X-25M Windows 7

Hey guys,

I just installed a new ssd (X-25m) on a clients computer along with Windows 7 64bit and 8GB of RAM. The computer hangs for anywhere from 10 seconds to 30 seconds+ and sometimes just freezes up all together until I restart. Sometimes, it freezes icons and I can still use the mouse, and can double click to start a program, but it won't start up until it unfreezes, then everything I've opened suddenly opens all at once. Other times, even the mouse is frozen, and I have to wait 30s to a minute before I get it back.

Things I've tried- all Windows Updates, and updated all chipset drivers for the mobo (MSI P6N SLI Platinum)

i noticed you did not list that you updated the bios, only drivers. try updating your mobo bios and make sure you have the latest intel x25m firmware.

Update:
forgot to mention- ssd firmware was already up to date, and I have installed SP1 for Win7

New things tried-
sfc /scannow
chkdsk
flashed bios on mobo and video card
different sata cable
1 stick of RAM at a time
old RAM
only ms services on startup in msconfig

Seems like the ram is ruled out. Probably Windows 7 or the SSD. Going to try a few more things.

Yes, fresh install of Win 7.

Ruby, does that DPC latency checker ever stop running, or do I just give you the numbers that I see while it's running?

Is there also a spindle drive on the PC? I think that you're supposed to stage Windows with only the SSD connected, then add the HDD for data after the OS load is complete. (?)

Yes, there are 4 or 5 other spindle drives connected. And yes, I forgot to do that at first, but when I realized that Win 7 didn't recognize the ssd, I unplugged all the hdds and left only the ssd during install.

Ruby, I let it run for about half an hour. The test interval is 1000 microseconds, the current latency hangs around 50-80 microseconds, and the absolute maximum is 1070 microseconds.

I'll let it keep running while I try some other things.

I'm guessing that you don't have a second SSD to try in the system in question, or a second system to stage the Intel SSD on. (?)

Nothing like this was happening prior to the attempted upgrade? Did you try running the latency check? You're going to run that continuously and look to see if it shoots up into the red when the system stalls. I once had a PCI wireless NIC causing this problem (though not for the durations you're seeing).

Ok, now after running a couple of programs and experiencing one of the hangs, the absolute maximum is now 60832586 microseconds, and it's telling me

"Some device drivers on this machine behave bad and will probably cause drop-outs in real-time audio and/or video streams. To isolate the misbehaving driver use Device Manager and disable/re-enable various devices, one at a time. Try network and W-LAN adapters, modems, internal sound devices, USB host controllers, etc."

Well, I guess I'll try that. Thanks for the info Ruby. And, while I was just typing this, there was another spike, this time 101370308 microseconds.

did you try a different SATA port? try maybe the one you had your DVD drive plugged in to and just leave the dvd drive unplugged for shits n giggles.

Tried different sata port. I tried ssd toolbox before. It's acting strangely. I just reinstalled Win7 with all other drives unplugged to see if it might have been something I installed before. Still hanging. Also, just re downloaded the ssd toolbox, and it's doing the same thing as before. Whenever I try to click on the SSD drive, it refreshes automatically, and the drive is unselected. Can't run anything with it.

i had a similar experience as you with an x25-m 120GB i got from microcenter for my wife's computer. it would hang when you tried to open things and would all open at once after almost a minute. then, it would just start giving a bsod. took it back to microcenter and exchanged it and the new one worked great.

did you try it in another laptop or desktop to see if it's maybe the drive itself? the drive i returned i actually tried in my dell e6410 laptop and it acted similar, so i knew it was the drive.

yeah some are just bad man. happens. i'd rma it - worst case it gets resold to some other sucka 🙂
