Can someone help me get a handle on all this ? I don't really know what Hangouts is ? I pretty much ignored it because it was part of G+, but now it isn't ?

Where does Google Chat fit in this ? Currently I use my GV number as a separate phone number, used on my laptop, not integrated with my cell number much. So I have incoming calls forwarded to Google Chat, not my cell. Chat then rings on my laptop when I have an incoming call.

Does Hangouts replace Chat ?

Also, can I use my Nexus 7 with Hangouts and my GV number to make and receive calls ? Is it going to use my cell minutes even if I'm using my GV number ?

Google Hangouts goal is to merge all the chat stuff into one. You were never forced to use G+ with it but got extra features if you did. However that's no longer the case.

Yes it's worth using Hangouts instead of Google Talk as it does indeed replace Talk. You can make or receive calls in Hangouts by either keeping Gmail or G+ site open (in another tab) or use the Hangouts extension in Chrome which will work just like a Desktop program.

Yes you can use your Nexus 7 with Hangouts and no this doesn't use Cell minutes which neither does using it on your PC.

It also won't on your Phone if you use Hangouts over Wifi or if your Cell has enough data too.

If your Phone isn't Android or iOS and you have data with has a basic browser you can use the mobile G-Voice site to place Calls over Cell line (will use minutes) and Texts (over data connection or over SMS Cell service): https://www.google.com/voice/m

Google Hangouts offers G-Voice calling out and you can enable Calling in which is in the settings on Android & iOS.

You can send and receive texts in Hangouts with G-Voice instead of through the G-Voice app / site and now MMS messages (Pictures and such).

You also can get G-Voice Voicemails in Hangouts now too.

Another awesome feature of Hangouts is you can video chat with up to 10 people at once or audio if some don't use a Cam. :p However another cool feature is you can even add phone contacts in the Hangout too. ;)

Google Voice does support 3 way calling too. Plus a wealth of other features. :D

You can even get a Obihai box in your House and hook a Landline phone to it and have a free Landline over your net connection too. :)

If there is a G-Voice or Hangouts bug, feature or annoyance you want the Dev to know then either at the G-Voice or Hangouts site or App use the Feedback tool.

This is the solution they are using to figure out what to tackle first and more quickly.

I'd also post to their G-Voice & Hangouts help forums after using the Feedback tool first.

Interesting Reddit quote:

Isn't that precisely what us GV users have been waiting for? I know I have been. He's on CM though, which can do this for you so it may have been an issue with CM.

i hope they provide a way to choose your outgoing number

When you send a message, it's absolutely clear whether it's an SMS or a regular Hangouts message. And if you want to send an SMS, you could switch to a different Google account to pick a different outgoing number (depending on what GV primary number attached to each account).

There have been two tiny updates (no new notes) for the Hangouts app in the last two days. I assume they were mostly bugfixes, but has anyone experienced different behavior/options?

Just hope they add in features we had with 3rd party options all this time....

Like if you're rooted and use the Xposed Module Repo.

You can get an app called XVoice Plus: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/xposed-xvoiceplus-voice-xposed-t2598889

What this simply does is allow you to send and receive Google Voice Texts in Hangouts.

Now you're thinking wait Hangouts does this now?

Yes but this keeps a copy of Texts at the G-Voice site and in Hangouts!

The only current downside to this app is no MMS messaging.

*HOWEVER* this also does group SMS messaging! <-- The thing that was removed when the Hangouts team added in G-Voice SMS support!

Still this keeps Hangouts and the G-voice site synced. I think many people still want a G-Voice site to easily access records.

Plus Voicemail is still synced in G-Voice and in Hangouts anyways....

The fact is 3rd party devs did this first and kinda did it better.....

Another example would be that GrooveIP or Talkatone could be set as the default dialer!

Unlike the Hangouts dialer! You could use G-Maps or G-Now to get a number and have it use GrooveIP or Talkatone to call!

Heck you could even have GrooveIP use the default Dialer! Makes more sense to use the default Dialer too.

What features have you been enjoying the most so far and what features from G-Voice & new features you'd like to see next?

Seems some confusion with the contributors in the Hangouts Forum on encouraging people to all use the Feedback Tool on making requests for new features? https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topicsearchin/hangouts/author$3Ame/hangouts/gsBzj2mwd2o

So I can't say for sure yet if there is a feature you'd like to see to use then use the Feedback tool or not....

I have been enjoying sending pictures in Texts. However before I'd just use FB Messenger or E-mail. Even more so the Calling in Android is definitely welcomed. :)

(If Talkatone and GrooveIP wanted they could re-add G-Voice calling now that Google officially supports 3rd parties but this would only be useful for Android devices below version 4.4. I think the only one in the Play Store that still works is Mo+ for Google Voice?)

What I'd like to see come next would be of course group SMS function back and customizable ringtones and whatever else I said in my last post lol!

It's great to have everything in sync be it on the phone, tablet or PC. Having it in Hangouts makes it even more awesome when someone sends a Text or Calls.

Even get Landline like Calls with an Obi box. (I kinda miss Goog411. Anyone ever used that? I think integrating Google Nearby search using text to speech / speech to text as a 411 thing built into G-Voice for using an Obi device or Landline phone would be cool in those quick times you need a number and don't want to whip out a Cell or PC. LOL!)

It's just amazing how cool G-Voice is after all these years. What 5 or 6 years now?

Did you know you can dial any phone (almost) with your G-Voice number and set it as a temporary call back phone?

Anyone know of any other neat tips or tricks?

Apparently, you need a Google+ account to listen to your voicemail on Hangouts...

Weird? I have one so I don't know. I know another issue you can't currently see voicemail in Hangouts in Gmail or the Chrome extension.

Most annoying is no option to turn off G+ global search when looking for someone in your contacts.

Today they have also said that Hangouts will no longer allow sending one SMS to multiple contacts. You have to have to use MMS messaging or Hangouts.

Discussed here: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/hangouts/Z3dRwsOQZZc[126-150-false]

I really hope they rethink that one....

Unknown if G-Voice is getting group MMS texting if they aren't adding sending one SMS to multiple contacts? (If you unmerge you can can still do this on the G-Voice site, mobile site or app. Well for now that is.)

I'm having the same problems described below. If creating a Google+ account is the solution, then that will never happen and I will continue checking voicemail in the Google voice app.
