Hanging up the FON

I think I've fullfilled my one year of service, and the FON router is starting to drive me nuts, delays and getting out of sync with the TimeWarner cable modem.

Its a Linksys WRT54GS, is flashing it to the open source firmware a good idea?

I wouldnt flash it just to flash it. If you require something the GS doesnt support by default, then sure.

Dont mess with a good thing...my GS is still running factory firmware for this exact reason.

This is running the buggy FON firmware for sharing your WiFi and FON collecting the money. A year ago the routers were "free" with depending on the timing $5 to $10 S&H, but you had to agree to run their firmware and leave the WIFI open to other users (for a year). Flashing to the standard Linksys firmware is another thing I have considered.

www.fon.com still is offering sort of free routers, but the new ones lock you into their firmware for eternity.
