I wouldn't. Get one of those concrete tapping drill bits and make a hole for your screw right in the block.

edit: choice handle

Hear hear. I wouldn't trust screws into grout holding up a heavy shelf.

Hammerdrill + anchors + tapcons right into block = win.

You don't need a hammerdrill for concrete blocks, they are soft enough to drill with a masonary bit and a regular drill.

Yeah, but that's not nearly as fun as a hammerdrill.

if its a cinder block wall as u indicated, then there should be parts of the wall where it is filled with concrete every 4 feet (i.e. there will be a thin column of concrete inside the hollow part of the cinder block every 4'). find that strip of concrete and use that

thanks. just bought some masonry bits. i'm renting the place so I wasn't too keen on putting a whole in the cinder blocks (refilling holes w/ grout would be easy, otoh), but oh well!! who needs a security deposit, right?

Bollocks, Just fill out the hole with some concrete / stucco patch. Do it all the time w/ the commercial units we service.
