Hanging a 42" Plasma

Here's the deal, I have a 42" plasma TV that I want to hang in my living room. The seating is 12' from the desired wall, and I am trying to measure out where to put the TV height wise. Everywhere I look online it says to put it eye level, but that will put my TV way down low and I don't think that's how they are supposed to look, it just seems weird. I was talking to a friend and they said there is a 1:1.5 ratio rule that says when you align your TV to put it for every 1 foot from the ceiling put it 1.5 feet from the floor, and at 12' from the destination wall there would be a slight incline but nothing major.

What would you do and how should it be installed?

Pick up a plasma console from Samsclub. The kind that has the big backer board. Hang the TV on that and let your wires hang behind it. Much easier and you can move it.

Agreed.

1.5:1 is a ratio you can use for screen size vs. distance to seating though.

Using a ratio for where to put it vertically based on the height of the ceiling makes no sense.
If I have 40' ceilings in my room and am sitting 12' away, am I supposed to hang it 16' above the floor? :p

I am in the same boat, when I sit down, I want the tv to be at a good eye level....but when I stand up, it will seem really low and akward.

It would be cool if there was some adjustable height wall mount available...maybe there is?

I'm afraid to hang my plasma up, it's terribly heavy. I'd talk to a pro about it.

Why not just compromise between the two heights?

They make ones that you can slide side to side... I'm not so sure about up and down though. That would seem harder to get right.

I have my screen up a bit higher than I would like to I can have my center channel at about ear level under it, but the back of my seating has a slight recline to it so it works out well.

Having the screen lower and the center channel position too low / too high bothers me a lot more than the screen being higher/lower.

I recently went to a high end HT store and went into their sample front projection theater. All the speakers were hidden, but it was painfully obvious to me that the center channel was only a foot or so above the ground :(
