I have 1 server and a couple of other pc's that im gonna use in a backroom.

I originalyl planned to put a couple of ikea desks back there, but geeze did they get expensive.

Has anyone made their own workstation/big table. I need to be about 8'x3'. As far as weight , it needs to hold a color laser printer, crt and dell poweredge server.

What material should i use?

Or should i suck it up and go ikea

I use an interior door set across two 2-drawer file cabinets as my desk. Huge, cheap, and functional. 🙂

I like it 😀 I made a stand for my 125 gallon fish tank using cinderblocks and 2x4's. Cost ~$30 and took about 2 hours to get the tank up and running (including going to the store) 😀

I like how he asks for a guru at bulding things, and gets suggestions like "put 2x4s on top of cinderblocks".

🙂

Hehe, true. Even so, given the size he's looking for and the fact that it'll be in a back room, I think the suggestions so far have been good. 🙂

I was thinking about using a huge slab of mdf and using 1/2 SS threaded rod as the four legs by attaching them with washers and nuts. But i think if i put weight in the center, it just wont hold

MDF will not be nice on your arms if you have a mouse on it.

Go to Home Depot and check out their waste laminate countertops. They usually sell the leftovers for next to nothing.

If you are near an Ikea, take a look at their Laminated counter tops. They sell in a variety of sizes, colors and patterns and are very decently priced. To support it, I'd suggest nailing/screwing in an 8ft ledger into the wall studs and get adjustable table legs (maybe 3-4) from ikea to support the front. For added support in the middle, I'd consider 2 or so of those triangle brackets (attahed to the studs of course) to help bear some of the weight in middle.

This would work fine (although I agree with the others, a laminate countertop would look nicer - HD/Lowes/whoever also sells them in precut lenghts for cheap) - if you are concerned with the desk bowing in the middle, simply reinforce it. Put a piece of (2x4/mdf/whatever) underneath so that the whole things look like a "T" from the side, and secure it at regular intervals with fasteners and glue. IE make half an I beam.

I have a very nice looking europeanish desk, and it's really just 4 pieces of wood slapped together.
