I'm looking for a handheld GPS unit. I'm not interested in the car models.

I have mostly been reading about the eTrex Legend and Vista series.

I'm wondering how they are actually different and which is better?

I would mostly use it to mark places when hiking and geocaching.

What are features too look for?
-is SIRF III still the best chip?
Are the maps for Garmin good?

Right now, I'm leaning towards the Garmin eTrex Vista HCx. Does Magellan offer any good competition for this model?

The difference between the Vista and Legend is the vista has a electronic compass and barometer. link
Might be better off looking at getting a Legend HCx, if you go garmin, as you'll still need to buy a memory chip and maps.

Read over at forums.groundspeak.com in the GPS Units and Software for lots more information.

Maps for hiking you'll probably want the TOPO U.S. 2008. If you want to start using the gps for driving you could look at the City Navigator North America 2008, which will give you turn-by-turn instructions for driving.
Both maps come on DVD or a preprogrammed chip, you're better off getting the DVD since you'll be able to load the maps onto your PC.

I haven't been keeping up but I suggest you get one with a compass and as big a screen as possible.

I picked up the Vista HCx from Gander Mountain. It was retailing at $299 but they price matched walmart.com for $227. Still figuring out the quirks, but I like it so far.
