Handheld GPS questions

Can anyone tell me if the average handheld GPS device would work in a metal and concrete tunnel about 10' undergound?

I've never used a GPS unit before, and I need to locate a utility tunnel for work.

It will not work. However, if your GPS device has an offline feature for measuring your distance, then you can possibly use that as a reference.

If you're trying to locate a tunnel, why are you already in it? Or am I missing something?

I need to determine where above ground to place something so that it is right on top of the buried tunnel. The tunnel is not straight, so I cannot guess.
