does it do it at the same point in the same file each time? some files don't seem to work right with it, in my experience.

It could be heat. Is this the bootcamp partition on the Mac, or a completely separate machine? Are you overclocking at all?

Try running something similar to Handbrake, that stresses the system, see if it happens then as well.

Interesting...just last night I tried using DVD Shrink on my XP boot, and clicking the Backup button causes it to immediately stop responding, and completely fucks up the shell, requiring a hard reset. Tried several different stored rips, one of which was from an old movie. Same thing after installing it on my 7 boot.

It worked perfectly on Dec 18th (last known shrink). I'm suspecting a KB...

Do you have a magicjack installed? That screws uo the SCSI/SPTI enumeration that some DVD software does. It hangs on me, and hangs other things, unless I unplug and then re-plug my magicjack.

Nah, no magicjack. However, I have a storage stick in the USB port that normally isn't plugged in...will remove and reboot later after I finish what I'm doing, see if that makes a difference. Otherwise, the only thing I've done since the 18th was install the Word 2010 compat plug-in (still running 2003), so I might need to revert that change.
