Handbrake/ casual gaming build

4. Brand preference. Not a fanboy, but leanings toward Asus/ Asrock, Intel.
6. Re-use parts: Case, PSU, Monitors, input devices, & Asus GTX-970 (until the GPU bubble pops)
7. Overclocking: No
8. Resolution: 1920x1080 (2x)
9. WHEN? next 3-5 days
10. Software: I have all the SW licenses needed already


The i5-4690S (In my Signature) is just not fast enough for what I am doing. Looking for any valid input as to my planned build:

The Ryzen 5 1600 is almost exactly the same price, and runs@3.2 instead of 2.8 for the 8400. I have not seen benchmarks on that software though. The motherboard to mate with that would be the ASRock AS350 pro4, and both those 2 CPU and motherboard are almost exactly the same price as the 8400.

The workload that I am running should scale similarly to this benchmark. If handbrake scaled better with thread count I would consider it, but the higher power consumption makes me think that heat could become an issue in the case I am using.

I think the 1600 takes less power than the 8400, but it looses in this benchmark badly, so unless you could get an 1800x for $180-190 (which I doubt), stick with your 8400, since this appears to be your primary purpose for this machine.

You could drop a 4790 or 4790K in there and wait for GPU prices to become sane again, and also Intel should have it's 8 core desktop chip and new chipset out by the end of the year.

I think the 4790K is very close to the 6700K in Handbrake.

For anyone who is interested in the results, for my custom encodes, I was getting approximately 15 fps averaged across an entire encode cycle with the i5-4690S / DDR3, with the i5-8400 & DDR4 I am getting an average of 32 fps (with occasional peaks in the high 40s).

I am calling that a success. (If anyone wants to compare their setup, here is the json file for my encode jobs.)
