Handbake question

Homerboy

Lifer
I'm trying to do some encoding of raw .avi DV captures, but no matter what settings I choose, it seems the video ends up being VERY washed out. The blacks are horribly grey and everything is "lighter"
WTH am I missing here?

tv vs pc input levels... something about 16-235 being tv, 0-255 being pc. its a matter of where black starts. never seen it go wrong in handbrake though. feeding digicam video through handbrake usually works.

Hmmm I think you (or I) am confused.
I have already captured the .avi to HDD from the DV tape using a third party program.
If I play the avi it looks really good. Clean, crisp and not at all white-washed.

I then take that .avi and compress it using Handbrake to an mkv and it end up being all washed out.
