Yesterday, the internet and phone at my house went out all of a sudden. Since this is an isolated outage, AT&T won't send a crew out to fix it until Monday >(

My neighbor's is working fine, so I figured I'd just take my PC to his house, plug it in, and everything would be fine.

WRONG!

All I did was remove his PC and put mine in its place. I have Auto-detect LAN settings on, but it can't make a connection for some reason. I ran ipconfig in command prompt, and it gave me an IP and a subnet mask(whatever that means) but when I go into network connections, the local area connection 2 icon says "Limited or no connectvity"

The worst part, is that even if I get advice, I have to write it down, unhook my neighbors pc, put mine in, try it out, then switch pc's again if it doesnt work to get more advice. Sorry if I seem demanding, but I'm very frustrated over hours of messing around with this. The more detailed and fuller instructions you guys could give, the better.

TYVM in advance!

We do have a Networking forum ;) but anyhow,

1) you are clearly addicted to teh IntarWeb :D

2) if you are plugging directly into his modem/gateway, it may have only one IP address available and have it "reserved" for his computer's MAC address. So when your computer comes along with a different MAC address, begging for an IP address, the modem says "sorry bro, I only have one, and it's on hold for that other computer with MAC address 00E0A938CCAF." Solution: unplug the modem/gateway, plug it in again, and see if it lets your computer have the IP address now.

I posted in the networking forum first, but not even a single view after 30 mins :(

I'll try that right now

I actually know quite a bit about hardware. ask me about a vid card, and i know which to buy, which is best, all that junk, but when it comes to internet, networks, routers, switches, I get confused as hell. I really need to take a class...
