HALP!! Win2K logon issue...can't login with local Admin account or any domain user accounts

A pc that we use for running a crucial app al of a sudden restarted and now it wont let anyone in. We've tried logging on as Administrator on the local account and as various users on the company domain. It is weird though that at the logon screen, there is no domain selection field. It only has the username and password fields. I think what might be a problem is the domain has been selected as something other than the local machine or the domain we are resgietered to. Is there a way to bring the domain selector back up? I've checked the network conections and they seem to be working.

EDIT: currently searching the MS Knowledge base, could also be a problem with Kerberos or one of the other logon services. Don't know too much about them, but gonna keep looking

What errors do you get when trying to log in as local administrator. If there is no domain field, the machine is not a member of a domain.

The same one that shows up when I'm using a domain account, that the logon is not valid. Even if the pc is not part of the domain, I should still be able to logon as the local machine Administrator right?

EDIT: I pinged it from another working machine and got an ip address. I can also connect to it via vnc from within the local network.

If you logon and it kicks you back out to the login, try this

1 Get into the recovery console. XP cd

2 Get the file userinit.exe from another computer. (location windows/system32 folder)

3.- Overwrite the userinit.exe original file (from the infected computer) with the new one (use a cd or disk to transport it)

(Command e:/userinit.exe c:/windows/system32/userinit.exe)

4.- Rename the userinit.exe to wsaupdater.exe

This worked on an XP boxes that kept on login the user out when she tried to login on any account

Here a place I had seen the answer. There may be more
