I'm not really a fan and don't own either of the Halos, but I know there are a bunch of fans here so I thought you guys would be interested.

Straight from the horse's mouth:
http://www.bungie.net/News/TopStory.aspx?story=maptacular&p=2747963

* We're releasing a total of nine new multiplayer maps.
* All nine maps will eventually be available as Live downloads and as a normal boxed game disc - available at retail for $19.99 (US).
* The release on Live will be staggered, some paid, some free!
* The first two maps are free and coming in a few short weeks. (late April)
* The same day the 2 free maps are released, 2 additional maps will be available for purchase.
* The remaining 5 maps will be made available as a paid download on the same day the retail package goes on sale.
* The retail disc will contain extras, including a documentary, a cool project from our cinematic and animation team, every Halo 2 update released so far and possily one or two other little treats.
* By late summer, ALL the maps will be available for free.

Hope this isnt a repost.

Yeah, it's almost as bad as paying to play MMORPGs.

I dont understand why they dont just let third parties make maps. Look at Quake series, Half life, Unreal, or any other fps. I've played more 3rd party maps than the official ones. I wouldn't even mind paying 20$ for a new set of 30 or so maps. There's a LOT Of good talent in the gaming community.

Even if allowing random people to make maps is out of the questions, they can have a review process. You submit your map to bungie, they have a poll on their site. The top 10 most popular 3rd party maps get released as Live downloads.

After seeing how much Colossus and Waterworks suck, its such a no brainer to have the community support itself.

Edit:
And if the maps are available on Live, that means more people will sign up for it just to get the maps. Ha, I figured if there were any more ways for them to make money, they'd have thought of it already.
