Halo PC CPU req.

I was wondering if anyone had some solid info regarding the Halo PC CPU requirements. I've seen it everywhere within the range of a P3 733-933. It's of particular interest to me, because my Athlon T-Bird 900 is kind of on the low end, and I'm not planning on upgrading to Athlon XP anytime soon. I'm planning on stepping up to Athlon64 next summer, after the current school year.

Adrenaline Vault interviews Gearbox's Randy Pitchford

Mr. Pitchford discusses the system requirements on page 2 of the article.
Minimum specs: A Pentium III 733 MHz with 128MB RAM and a GeForce2 MX. A 56K modem is needed for multiplayer. That was hard to get right. Players who want the best experience should get a faster processor (any Pentium 4 is good) and double the RAM - then run Halo with a state-of-the-art video card. (One of the newest cards from ATI or nVidia will do.)
and
You'll want the latest fully DirectX 9 compliant video card if you want the "better than Xbox" look. This will give you blazing speed and pixel shader 2.0 support along with tons of other cool features. Halo can render everything with lots of passes or heavy use of pixel shaders. We also support a couple different generations of DirectX 8 cards and most DirectX 7 cards. DirectX 7 cards will look the most distant from the Xbox version because all of the content was authored with pixel shaders in mind. It's no longer just nice looking texture mapped polygons. It's way beyond that now. [Ed. note: The screenshots accompanying this interview were taken with a Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB AGP card.]
Peace

Thanks. Since the specs are all over the place, I'm just hoping that the game is playable on my computer.

If you want the game to look the same or better than the Xbox version, then it won't be a shred close to payable on your computer. If you want playable framerates with full effects on, you need a FAST DirectX 9 card (Radeon 9700/9800 series or FX5900 series) and a 2+ Ghz CPU.

If you are willing to play it with stripped down graphics (considerably worse than Xbox, as stated in JSSheridan's quote) then your machine will possibly squeak by, but it probably won't be too pleasant. Especially if you have anything below a Geforce 4.

my rig seems to be running the beta nicely... a few stutters but its at 1200x1084 with the details on, and its only the beta so i imagine there will be more polish etc added to make it a bit quicker

really? i didnt think the requirements would be that great. if u think about it, an xbox runs on a 733mhz pentium processor and a geforce 3. so im guessing requirements shouldnt be TOO far off from that. if you have anything thats moderately above that, then i think you'll be straight (at least, to match the graphics of the xbox version). im sure the computer requirements may be slightly higher, especially if you want an exhilirating gaming experience...but playability along with good decent graphics shouldnt cost too much. feel free to correct me if im wrong.

the story is great, and the graphics are sweet i love it, i mean those invisible barriers and see through door glitches are kinda annoying but expected since its a beta

Actually I think its more like a 733MHz Celeron and a GF4 Ti(NV25, not NV20)

However, since the console is likely to be much more heavily optimized, and probably not using FSAA/AF(who needs that when you've got a TV that does natural FSAA? :) ) and running at a much lower resolution, you'll need a higher spec'ed PC to be able to play it at PC level settings.

What program was the leaked beta created in? Having some difficulty opening it? Winrar?

I know it is a beta, so maybe that's why it runs poorly on my PC. This is with a 9700 Pro / 1700+.

I didn't play it much when it was back on Xbox when it came out, but did at a friends some. Didn't see anything too special. Maybe it was the Goldeneye of another generation or something.

And don't whine about me trying beta, I want to try this before I possibly buy it =D.

EDIT: Sound also becomes scratchy for no apparent reason. Tried lowering acceleration in dxdiag options.

no probs installing it ... burnt the .nrg file that i got off bit torrent onto a CD using Nero 6 and installed straight off that.

The gameplay just seemed a bit ... tacky? AI wasnt that good, graphics were choppy even on my 2.6c @ 3.3, 9800pro & 1gb HyperX pc3500, sound was just ok

if this game was released 6 months ago, it'd be awesome ... but after playing a couple of demos from the goodies that are in the offing, I'd rather save my $$$s for HL2, Call of Duty, Doom3, Max Payne, etc.

Yea it's definitely true that way too much time was wasted in getting this to the PC. With HL2 coming out Halo PC will probably be forgotten.

I'm running the beta on my computer pretty well right now. Athlon 1.6ghz and Radeon8500. The bump mapping doesn't seem to work and there are some graphical glitches, but I expect that to be fixed when released. Average-low frame rate at 800x600 with all settings on full, 16XAF, no AA.

The game itself is definately nice. Warthog is awsome to drive around. The assault rifle feels to much like the one in Unreal2 for my tastes. =/

Assault rife is useless on heroic and legendary. As soon as you can, dump it for a plasma rifle or plasma pistol

I'm running a Radeon 8500LE/128mb. I know that it won't look the best, but playability is all I'm concerned about right now. Even if I went up to a GeForce 4200, I wouldn't be able to fully unleash the power of it due to CPU scaling.

The only reason I bought a XBOX 2 years ago was for this game. It is now where it righfully belongs on the PC. I got my beta to run my first file got corrupted problably when I tried to rename it (lol) anyway I didn't run FRAPS to check out my FPS but I'm playing it at 1024 X 768 with 4X AA and 16X AF. I will bump it up to 1600X 1200 to find the sweet spot. What does checking application preferance do? I usually leave them unchecked. Everything on Quality with Truform off and V-sync on.

It's running well on my overclocked barton and overclocked Ti4200 @ 305/625 (close to 4600 speeds). At 1024x768 with all the eyecandy on, it slows down a bit too much for my tastes in some areas, but @ 800x600 it's nice and smooth. I'm running a gig of PC3200, but 512 would probably be ok too.

I think the game looks great. The animation is top notch and the sound is also well done. I only wish I could see what it looks like in DX9. :(
