Halo crashes

MDE

Halo was crashing like mad on me and I went nuts. Reinstalled nForce and video drivers, backed down my overclock, then reinstalled Windows and nothing helped. Then I remembered the problems I've heard about Nvidia's sound drivers, so I disabled hardware audio and it magically works now. Anyone else have this problem (especially on a similar system)?

Asus A7N8X Deluxe
512 MB Buffalo PC3200
onboard sound
VisionTek GeForce4 Ti4600 @ 300/700 (stock 300/650)

it was off and it still crashes, i ran it in safe mode, still crashes

Wierd, did you install the patch? If not just try connecting to an Internet game and it'll automatically download.

for me halo crashes when i run certain settings such as "-vidmode xyz" or "-novideo". for me it crashed when it's about to display the main menu page. when does it crash for you?

i think this is a horrible port, which should run fine most systems.

also i blame valve for this. why? because if hl2 wasn't delayed i wouldn't have gotten halo in the meantime 🙂

This is why I typically never use onboard sound except for budget systems.

If you must have hardware accelerated EAX support you should buy an Audigy LS.

the game crashes within seconds, is it possible to get the patch without goin into the game?

Don't think so. Do you get the dialog box that tells you Halo crashed and asks if you want to start it in safe mode?

EDIT: just read your second to last post. I'm stumped. Try different drivers I guess.

I don't HAVE to have hardware accelerated EAX, but it would be nice to be able to use something that Nvidia used as a selling point for nForce2.

You can always slow down sound acceleration in direct X properties.

Just type "dxdiag" in the run menu then go to sound tab & move the slider to the left 1 step.

I guess I could do that, but then what's the point of "Audigy class" sound when I have to slow it down? Anyone know how to submit a driver bug report to Nvidia?

You can go into your Halo folder and update it that way.

I'm not having this problem, halo is playing great for me.

I made sure I downloaded all the updates from windows update, drivers for nforce and nvidia display drivers.

Edit: Just in case you don't see it the file name is "haloupdate", it will download any and all updates automatically.

Will i have same problem with mine, i got a shuttle AN35n ultra(nForce2 chipset) with on board sound, i havn't set up, cuz i didn't order ram or HD yet, should i get a sound card with it, so i don't encounter that?

You never know what's going to happen. It runs fine with the nForce2 APU disabled, running through pure software audio for me.

I havent Been having any problems with halo exept that i had to trun the video down a lot 🙁 to make the frame rate what i want.
Whats the Point of having a Geforce 4 Ti 4200 if i cant run it at least at 800 by 600 rez and have everything truned on.
