when taking the garbage out this morning around 2:30am, i noticed something unusual with the moon

it was bitterly cold outside, but i managed to grab my camera and tripod and get a few shots (while wearing boxers, a t-shirt, and some flip flops)

I took several different exposures with the intent of stacking them, but right now i'm just going to share the exposure with the halo :)

You came upon a natural phenomenon that occurs in winter due to ice crystals between you and the moon.

Halo

It even makes me shiver looking at it. :)

Should be fun to play with. Well done!

Do you by any chance live in Arkansas? We recently encountered this as well. Knew what was causing it, just never seen it that large. No one in the neighborhood had either.. A few people took pictures and sent it in to the local weather man.

thanks for the link corky. I'm glad i was able to catch the halo!
A couple years ago i saw the northern lights, but couldn't figure out how to get a picture of it.

now i'm ready, but i haven't seen the northern lights since :(

I wish i had a wider lens, 18mm on a 1.5 crop isn't wide enough for sky shots

David, i'm in northern illinois
